Our Reception experience is designed to spark curiosity and help children explore the world around them in a joyful, meaningful way. With the support of our highly qualified staff, and making full use of our beautiful surroundings and outstanding facilities, we create an environment where children can thrive.
We encourage active learning, imaginative exploration, and creative problem-solving, helping children develop confidence, decision-making skills, and independence. While play remains central throughout the year, the learning gradually becomes more structured to support school readiness.
Children also benefit from specialist teaching in P.E., Music, Swimming, and French, and enjoy a weekly session in our woodland classroom—bringing learning to life through nature.
During the Reception year, each child’s progress is carefully observed and supported through the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. Staff continuously assess development across the seven areas of learning by engaging with children and observing their day-to-day activities.
At the end of the year, a comprehensive Foundation Stage Profile is completed for every child. This assessment reflects a broad picture of each child’s achievements, based on ongoing observations and professional insight—there are no formal tests or tasks. Instead, teachers thoughtfully build a profile that celebrates the child’s growth and learning journey throughout the year.
Our small class sizes mean we can offer up to three times more qualified teacher time than is typically available in most state schools. This enables us to deliver more focused learning, including twice-weekly adult-led Maths and Literacy sessions—ensuring children receive the individual attention and challenge they need to thrive.
Our latest assessment results highlight the impressive progress and performance of our pupils. Strong, open partnerships with parents play a key role in this success, helping us uphold the highest standards of behaviour, engagement, and achievement both in and out of the classroom.
Learning at Mowden Hall extends far beyond the classroom. Our pupils enjoy regular trips and engaging visits that bring learning to life. In Reception, for example, children might welcome visitors such as the local fire service or take part in exciting drama workshops. Trips include visits to pantomimes and museums, and throughout the year, children participate in a range of school performances.
From an early age, children benefit from expert teaching and dedicated facilities. Our specialist subjects include Art, French, Music, PE, Outdoor Education, andSwimming—with lessons beginning as early as Nursery in our on-site swimming pool. This early exposure enriches the curriculum and helps children discover and develop their talents.
With over 52 acres of beautiful grounds, outdoor learning is a daily part of life at Mowden Hall. Children have endless opportunities to explore, play, and learn in nature—building confidence, curiosity, and a love for the outdoors.
Our in-house catering team prepares fresh, nutritious meals each day in our dedicated Dining Room. With a wide variety of delicious lunch options included in the school fees, mealtimes are a positive and social part of the school day.
