STEM day at Westfield School

STEM day at Westfield School

On Tuesday 7th December, Year 5 and 6 girls went on STEM day to Westfield School. When we arrived we took part in a Physics activity where we made a cup and elastic band gliders and catapults. After this, we had a presentation from the Head of Maths at Westfield about her previous career in Chemical Engineering. Our next activity was Chemistry where we looked at the science of fireworks. We used a splint to burn different salts in the Bunsen burner flame which produced a variety of different colours. Then we took part in an Engineering Workshop where we had to first look at a picture and identify all the areas that had used engineering. Then we designed and created a water filter to purify dirty water. We chose sand, cotton wool, and fabric for our filter and it took a long time for the water to filter through. We had lunch next and I chose pizza and a cookie, it was very nice. During the lunch break, we went to the Sports Hall and played netball. Our final activity was Psychology where we completed a lot of different activities. These included drawing a star using a mirror, constructing a model brain, and optical illusions. We then returned to the hall where we had a talk from Emma Marshall, a Building Services Engineer. A big thank you to Westfield School and to Mrs Scott and Mrs Belshaw for taking us.
