Food and Nutrition

At Mowden Hall School, we know that nutritious and delicious food is key to each child’s wellbeing.

Napoleon believed ‘an army marches on its stomach’, which is why we put such an emphasis on high quality, delicious food to provide the energy that drives our pupils and staff.

We are mindful of the connection between food and mood and provide pupils with a wide variety of nutritious and balanced meals and snacks to keep them feeling their best.

Great importance is placed on the quality and variety of school meals at Mowden Hall School. A team of in-house caterers, managed by our own Head Chef, prepares and cooks fresh meals for the children on site. A healthy, balanced diet is achieved through carefully planned menus. The School eats as a community in house groups, and there is a formal end to every meal. Good manners are encouraged and expected of all children, and each house serves and waits on the other children on a rotational daily basis.

We have breakfast options every day of the week. This includes a selection of everyday items as well as pastry and toast stations, cereal and yogurt bars.

We have bespoke lunch and dinner menus for hot meals, salad options (from Year 3), a packed lunch offer for matches and desserts.

We celebrate special festivals such as Christmas and St Patrick’s Day with themed meals and have regular Try it Tuesdays where children are encouraged to suggest family favourite dishes or something they have tried on holidays and are cooked for the whole school to try!

We are a nut aware school and can cater to students with other allergies and food intolerances. Please let us know if your child has any specific food requirements.

We work with local suppliers. They only source red tractor British meat and sustainable fish that is MSC certified. They endeavour to buy British fruit and vegetables where possible. They support Fair Trade products to ensure a fair deal for growers. Their milk and cream are supplied by British farmers and they only use free-range eggs.

Part of the way we encourage healthy eating is to provide beautifully cooked food with plenty of variety and fresh fruit and vegetables.

The School aims to be ‘nut and seed free’ and we ask parents to adhere to this policy by not sending in any products containing nuts and seeds. And of course, sleep is an essential component of health and well-being and we encourage and support pupils with their sleep routines allowing them to rest and restore.
